Almost 90 litres of alcohol being smuggled into Arnhem Land seized by police

Police in the Northern Territory have seized a combined total of almost 90 litres of alcohol following four alleged attempts to smuggle illicit substances into Arnhem Land.
East Arnhem Land is a "dry area", meaning a permit is required to buy and drink takeaway alcohol.
Police said four different cars were stopped by officers from Cahills Crossing over the past fortnight, each of them allegedly attempting to smuggle alcohol into the area, including two that had cannabis on board.

"On Friday 20 October between 4pm and 9pm, members apprehended a Holden Commodore on the Oenpelli Access Road and located 12 litres of alcohol," NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services said.
"An hour later, a Holden Captiva was apprehended on the same road, containing 60 grams of cannabis and 50 litres of alcohol.
"Another Holden Commodore was apprehended with 70 grams of cannabis and 4.7 litres of alcohol.
"Finally, a Nissan Navara was apprehended with 23 litres of alcohol on board."

Each of the drivers were issued with notices to appear in court, and all of the drugs and alcohol were seized to be destroyed.
"Alcohol related violence, specifically relating to domestic violence, remains one of the largest social issues facing our communities," Acting Senior Sergeant Steve Langdon said.
"Alcohol restricted areas are in place for the protection of the vulnerable and the ripple effect from its supply into these communities can be nothing short of devastating."
