Hundreds of Aussies stranded after Pacific airline scraps flights

Australian passengers travelling with Air Vanuatu are facing cancelled flights and travel disruption due to a technical issue impacting the Pacific airline.
Hundreds of Australians have been left stranded as the carrier's sole Boeing 737 aircraft remains grounded today because of a mechanical problem.
The plane flies on routes between Port Vila, Vanuatu, to Brisbane and Sydney, and Auckland in New Zealand.

Air Vanuatu said it was working with affected passengers and covering the cost of accommodation and meals for guests.
"The cause of these disruptions is unscheduled technical work that is required on the aircraft," Air Vanuatu said in a statement.
"This urgent engineering work is needed to ensure that the long term schedule integrity is restored moving forward.
"The airline appreciates that this break down is causing disruption to the travel plans of guests and Air Vanuatu recognises the paramount importance of passenger safety and the integrity of its operations."
One Australian passenger stranded in Vanuatu, Eva Wiland, told Today this morning her flight home scheduled for yesterday had been cancelled and she had no information about a replacement.
'We've had no news. We were told not to go to the airport. Not to try to get ... another flight," she said.
"There's a flight to Auckland tomorrow and then we have to get another ticket, back from Auckland to Sydney. Separately."
