It has peeling wallpaper, a garish carpet which doesn't appear to have been updated since around the 1970s and a kitchen and bathroom which need ripping out.

But this apartment on Sydney Harbour was snapped up for just under $2.5 million.

It's in Holmsdale Tower in North Sydney.

This is the view from the balcony, which is uninterrupted.

"Taking in the boat moorings of the surrounding bays and looking out towards the harbour heads, the space offers inspiring scope for your own touches against these backdrops," agent BresicWhitney said of the apartment.

The scenery from the balcony is likely a big distraction from the condition of the home inside however.

The place appears to have a wall-to wall blue-purple carpet more usual for a pub or perhaps a casino.

And that's not the only off-putting design.

Agents Bresic Whitney said in the listing it has "inspiring scope to add your own touches."

Once of the two bedrooms is so unloved the backing paper is peeling from the walls.

That view from the window of the CBD perhaps makes up for it however.

The kitchen appears to be original to the apartment, with dated cupboards and appliances including an early version of a dishwasher.

The agent describes it as "retro".

The other bedroom features a limp curtain, an old-fashioned dressing table and matching wardrobes - and that carpet again.

The bathroom of the Whaling Road apartment in Sydney could also do with a major revamp.

It has old brown tiles and a yellowing vanity unit.

The apartment building does have its own indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

There is also a sauna, games room and library.

The apartment also has not one but two parking spaces.
