Police are pleading for information about the murder of a "kind and caring" man inside a prison in central Queensland.
Benn Schinkel, 31, was found unresponsive with serious injuries in the activities building of Capricornia Correctional Centre at Etna Creek near Rockhampton at 11.10am on October 22 last year.
Schinkel was given a short prison sentence after a dangerous driving incident in which he sustained ongoing injuries that caused him to walk with a limp.
A Queensland Police statement from the time said Schinkel was driving a blue 2019 Ford F150 dual cab ute on the Bruce Highway when it crossed into the other lane and hit a truck head-on.
"No other persons were injured in the incident for which he was charged," Detective Sergeant Greg Bishop said.
Schinkel had been in the mainstream prison secure unit 1 for less than a month and would have been eligible for parole a few months later in January 2023.
Officers believe his injuries were the result of a serious assault and are treating his death as murder.
Schinkel's father Michael Schinkel said his son was loving, caring and "would do anything for his mates and family".
"We really are appealing to anybody out there if they could come forward to help us solve Benn's murder. It's broken our family, and we need to have justice," Michael said.
He said his son was "missed by so many people".
Bishop said police believed there were people in Rockhampton and Townsville who would assist with their investigation.
"Everyone in custody has the right to do their time, to go home to their families and move on with their lives," Bishop said.
"We urge anyone with information regarding this incident, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem and whether you witnessed the incident directly or have heard something from another person, to please come forward.
"If you know something, we urge you to come forward and help us bring closure for Benn's family."
Investigations are ongoing.
