In Sydney, wreaths were laid after Rear Admiral Chris Smith spoke about the sacrifice of Australia's serving personnel.
"We gather today not to glorify war, but to remember ourselves that we value who we are and the freedoms we possess and to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed to shaping the identity of our nation and those that continue to serve," Smith said.
One ex-serviceman told 9News the day was as important to him as Christmas.
"I served and it's a chance to spend some time with my brothers and chance to remember our forefathers and what they did," he said.
