Sam Kerr waved at the multitude of phone cameras pointed at her.

Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese consoled Sam Kerr after the game, offering a hug and some kind words.

The team beat Australia 2-0 to claim third place in the competition.

While the Tillies looked strong at the start of the match, Sweden managed to win with Matilda's fans across the country sharing in the disappointment.

The second half was tense in the Fan Zone at Tumbalong Park as those rugged up against the cold waited to see if the Matildas could catch up on the scoreline.

Matilda's superstar Sam Kerr was turfed after a knee to the calf during the Australia vs Sweden match.

She decided to play on, despite suffering a calf injury just before the start of the tournament, which saw her sit out the first few group games.

The game had its fair share of dramas, with Sweden's Kosovare Asllani and Australia's Caitlin Foord colliding heavily while battling for possession, with both players requiring medical attention.
