It's feared hundreds of Queensland jobs will be lost with Glencore expected to announce the closure of its Mt Isa mine on Wednesday.
Sources have told 9News the Mt Isa copper mining operation has reached "end of life", though the copper smelter and refinery operations are not expected to be affected.
The company, Australia's second largest copper producer, employs about 1200 workers.
Locals say the copper mine's closure will come as a huge blow to the community and local economy.
Glencore, the mining giant headquartered in Switzerland, is understood to have executives from Sydney in Mt Isa tonight finalising the announcement, scheduled for first thing in the morning.
