New measures to reduce noise pollution have been announced by Brisbane Airport Corporation after an explosion in complaints from residents in the city's eastern suburbs.
The airport operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no curfew and at peak times planes take off and land every few minutes.
In July 2020, the airport's second runway opened, doubling the airport's flight capacity and creating a series of new flight paths above suburbs that were never previously affected.
In response to the complaints, Brisbane Airport Corporation has announced the new runway will no longer be used between 10pm and 6am, unless there is an emergency.
Three airlines have also agreed to direct take-offs and landings over Moreton Bay instead of over the city at night, weather permitting.
Jetstar also plans to add new generation aircraft to its fleet which are said to be 50 per cent quieter than older models.
The measures are expected to bring some relief to residents in Teneriffe, Bulimba, Morningside and Murrarie.
Brisbane Flight Path Community Alliance has welcomed the changes but is still fighting for a flight cap and curfew.
