Independent MP Monique Ryan has said she is "immensely proud" of her electorate of Kooyong in Melbourne, which returned a strong Yes vote in yesterday's Voice referendum.
The Voice to parliament referendum failed to pass last night, with all states and territories, except for the ACT, producing a majority No vote.
Kooyong had recorded a 60.68 per cent Yes vote at time of writing, in stark contrast to the national vote.
"Last night the nation rejected a gracious invitation from Indigenous Australians to recognise them in the Constitution through a Voice to Parliament," Ryan said in a statement this morning.
"I feel great sadness about that but I unquestioningly accept that result."
She said the efforts of volunteers that resulted in Kooyong's support of the proposed change built on the "journey that started at the last Federal election".
"Once again we have rejected cynicism and voted for a more generous and inclusive Australia.
"Once again, the real conversations our hundreds of volunteers had overcame the lies and disinformation spread by the Liberal Party - Peter Dutton's Liberal Party.
"Once again, we choose Active Hope, proudly displaying our independence in the face of negative party politics.
Ryan won the seat of Kooyong, an affluent inner Melbourne electorate, from former treasurer Josh Frydenberg at the 2022 Federal Election.
